HOW DOES THE ICON PAINTING COURSE WORK?
An icon is created through a series of interconnected stages, and the aim of the course is for the participant to understand the entire process, not simply reproduce the final appearance of a particular model.
Work begins with choosing an iconographic model and becoming familiar with the basic principles of composition and traditional icon painting. With the instructor’s guidance, the participant then moves through the different stages of creating an icon – from preparation and transferring the drawing to painting, modelling forms, working on details and making final interventions. Each stage is explained through practical work so that the participant gradually develops confidence and independence.

 

TRADITIONAL ICON PAINTING TECHNIQUE
The course uses the traditional icon painting technique, with pigments and egg tempera on a prepared linden board. Participants learn how to prepare the paint, understand the characteristics of pigments, work with light and dark tones, gradually build form, and develop the face, clothing and other elements of the composition in traditional icon painting.
Special attention is given to understanding the materials and the correct sequence of work, because each stage affects the final quality of the icon.

THE COURSE IS ALSO SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS

No previous experience in icon painting or formal art education is required.

Beginners receive guidance from the very first step and gradually become familiar with the technique, materials and working principles.

Participants with prior experience can deepen their knowledge, refine specific stages of the process and work with more demanding iconographic models.

The programme is not identical for every participant. Tasks, pace and level of complexity are adapted to each person’s previous experience and progress.

INDIVIDUAL WORK IN SMALL GROUPS
One of the key characteristics of Art Centrala is the individual approach.
Although participants work together in the studio, everyone progresses at their own pace and may be at a different stage of creating an icon.
Small groups allow the instructor to follow each participant, explain procedures directly during the work and step in when support is genuinely needed. This way, participants do not only learn what to do, but gradually understand why each procedure is used.

GILDING IN ICON PAINTING
Depending on the chosen iconographic model, participants can also become familiar with the basics of applying gilding to an icon. Imitation gold is included in the course price, while working with genuine gold leaf is possible by prior arrangement, with an additional charge for the material.
For participants who want to explore this area in greater depth, Art Centrala also organises a separate course in traditional water gilding on bole.

INSTRUCTOR – VLADIMIR SEKULIĆ
The icon painting course is led by Vladimir Sekulić, an Art Centrala instructor.
His role is not only to demonstrate the technique, but to guide each participant through the process of creating an icon, explain the individual stages and help them become more confident and independent over time.
